BleachBit 0.9.6 beta

BleachBit, the open source system cleaner, announces the public 0.9.6 beta which includes enhancements, bug fixes, and translation updates. Please help test.

These particular areas are a priority for testing:

Deleting files doesn't free disk space

During work to improve BleachBit's method of wiping free disk space, I noticed a relatively obscure way in which deleted files do not fully free the disk space they occupied. The process is basically to create an empty partition, fill it with 2000 files each 4096 bytes each, and then delete the files. If the files are in the root of the partition, then the file system keeps 45 more blocks allocated. If the 2000 files are created in a sub directory that is deleted after the 2000 files are deleted, then all the used blocks are freed.

Winapp2.ini issue with Piriform resolved

Recently Piriform asked me to remove the winapp2.ini importer from BleachBit.. I replied to Pirform and eventually worked things out. The winapp2.ini importer will stay.

Here's the email from Louise at Piriform:

CCleaner asks BleachBit to Remove Winapp2.ini Importer

I received an email from Piriform, makers of CCleaner, asking me to remove a feature from BleachBit that allows individual BleachBit users to use winapp2.ini files created by the community of users. I don't see how the terms of use apply, but I am checking into it.

Update (February 6): The winapp2.ini importer issue has been resolved.

BleachBit 0.9.5

BleachBit 0.9.5 better cleans Google Chrome, Thunderbird, and 64-bit Linux systems and improves compatibility with Winapp2.ini, which offers 1237 cleaners for Windows. We are also happy to announce a new GitHub repository for developing and sharing cleaners.
