ESET antivirus slows down cleaning

Forums:

i have noticed on many computers, it's always the ones (including my own) with ESET antivirus installed. It doesn't matter which version, but ESET slows down the cleaning process.

This is a very big pain, epsecially when cleaning %windir%\SoftwareDistributon. Disabling ESET doesn't fix the problem and sometimes it's quicker just to delete the files myself.

I don't have this problem with CCleaner, so I suspect it's the way BleachBit accesses the files.

Have you tried excluding BleachBit in ESET's real-time protection? When you say you disabled ESET, how are you disabling it? Do you disable it by disabling each protection module or do you just exit it from the system try? I ask because if you just exit it from the system tray, it can still be running in the background.

With my 6 years experience in the Anti-Virus industry ESET was always down on my list. If you want a free and open-source anti-virus, you can try ClamWin with Clam Sentinel.

Windows 10 x64 (switching to ReactOS in the future).

I haven't tried excluding Bleachbit in ESET, but I might try it and report back. I am disabling ESET by right clicking the system tray icon and choosing "Temporarily disable protection".

Do you have "Overwrite files" enabled in the BleachBit preferences? If so, have you tried turning it off?

Turning on the option "Overwrite" files slows things down proportional to the size of the files (so larger files are slower than smaller files). BleachBit 1.6 uses basic system calls to do this, and in the future I will look into specialized methods that may be faster.

No, I don't have "overwrite files" enabled in the preferences.

Can you please tell me the version and package (anti-virus, internet security, etc) of ESET you are using? I will test this myself on my system and see if it happens with me, too.

Can you also tell us which operating system you are using? 32-bit or 64-bit?

It doesn't matter which version I use - v6-8, AV or internet security. Nor does it matter which OS I use, Windows XP, Vista or 7, 32-bit or 64-bit. It does it on ANY Windows computer which is running ESET software.

I installed a 30-day trail version of ESET Smart Security 8 on my system, but I didn't notice any slow down, however, I notice the ESET I installed creates some large files that Winapp2 has set to delete. I think this issue is with the previewing issue which was reported here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bleachbit/+bug/1265963

If you think it is a different issue, can you please create a bug report at BleachBit's launchpad (the link above) with a detailed report and Andrew will look into it.

Thanks--Bug 1265963 is a good guess if there are many files in that folder (regardless of how many actually match).

See also the discussion BleachBit Stars Slow First Time where we discovered that enabling Game Mode in ESET makes BleachBit run faster.

Today I uploaded BleachBit to ESET's whitelist system, so I hope this will help.
