Cleaning out old windows updates

Forums:

A long time ago, windows added in their built in cleaner to clean out old windows updates that are no longer needed. There is about 655MB on my system of uneeded updates. The decription says:

Windows keeps copies of all installed updates from Windows Updates, even after installing newer versions of updates. Windows Updates cleanup deletes older versions of updates that are no longer needed and taking up space. (You might need to restart your computer)

You can look at this by accessing disk cleanup in windows and clicking on Clean system files for administrators. After that, more entries will show and one will say Windows Update Cleanup, atleast that how it is on my Windows 7 ultimate 64-bit. I do not know if it is different for each operating system. Neither BleachBit nor CCleaner has this option in theirs. Maybe BleachBit can have an option for this? I don't know if it is possible though so you might have to do some research on it.

Try the option System - Update uninstallers. If Windows detects there are still files left, please let me know how much is in the directory %WINDIR%\SoftwareDistribution and which version of Windows you tested.

I am testing under a Windows 7 ultimate 64-bit service pack 1 with all latest updates from Microsoft. I am using the latest BleachBit 1.2 and the latest winapp2 supplied by BleachBit updater. I ran the entry Update Uninstallers as you wanted in BleachBit and Windows disk cleaner is still detecting 655MB left of Windows Update Cleanup. After cleaning SoftwareDistribution folder contains 243MB (255,229,241 bytes), 23 files and 18 folders.

Just want to know if you ever got the chance to look into this. Ever since i got my SSD, Windows cleaner is now showing up to 1.02GB of old update files on my Windows 7 64bit SP1. BleachBit 1.7.6 still is not deleting them.

Thank you for the reminder. Because BleachBit is an option to delete Windows update, it should work, and if it does not, it is a bug that should be fixed soon, so I filed it as bug #1455708. Having it on Launchpad helps me keep track of it.
