BleachBit freezing/slowness

Forums:

Hey, I've been trying out BleachBit 1.0 on Ubuntu 13.10 on a smaller laptop (since my old Macbook Pro recently broke beyond repair) and I'm having some problems that I'm wondering if there's a solution for.

I've tried to do some cleaning with BleachBit, including deep scan and removing free space. I know both deep scan and deleting free space are time consuming processes, I've deleted free space all the time on other OSes with similar software but it's still taking a lot longer than it should, which leaves me a bit worried.

I'm currently on a small Asus laptop with about 1gb of memory with Ubuntu installed on a 111GB partition, yet I've tried to let it do it's thing over night but it takes WELL over 12 hours without any visible results whatsoever. Usually these kind of things only take half as long or less on a laptop with these kind of specs, so I dunno what's going on.

I'm not too tech-savvy, but I hope we can find a solution on this together.

What do you mean by "without any visible results" whatsoever?

During "wipe free disk space," you should see two things. First, the BleachBit should show a progress bar with the message, "Please wait. Wiping free disk space. About 80 minutes remaining." Second, if you use some monitoring utility like Gnome System Monitor or "df -h", you should see the amount of free disk space approaching zero.

Today I pushed some changes that may help show the progress. BleachBit 0.9.6 introduced a new way to wipe file system metadata (in addition to contents), and the metadata part can be slow. It was not showing progress, but BleachBit 1.0 will show the progress. Look for a beta version coming soon, test, and let me know how it goes.

I'll have to apologize for the late response, I've been a bit too distracted to check out the forums.

What I meant was that the program window turns gray, like they usually do when a program is loading in Ubuntu. But it just stays gray without anything happening even though I give it 12 hours or more... I do some other processes as well, so maybe those are the culprits, but I'm not sure what. It seems to do fine when I clean caches, but every time I've tried erasing the free disk space, nothing happens. The window doesn't even get the time to display a message about erasing the free space before it freezes.

I hope I helped answer your question.

The recent fix may address this. Wiping free disk space happens in three phases. The last two phases can be long, but in BleachBit 1.0 they were not updating the application window (which looks like a freeze). Now all three phases update the window. Soon I hope to post a beta, and you can try it.
